Green Memory Café to Continue

After successfully trialling the idea a couple of months’ ago, organisers of a new initiative in Ruddington for people living with memory loss (and their carers) is set to be held here every two months.

The ‘Rushcliffe Green Memory Café’ will continue to take place in and around the newly refurbished Visitor Centre by the lake in Rushcliffe Country Park – with the next one happening this Wednesday 16th August. Once again you’re invited along to experience nature-based activities, short walks or simply to relax, socialise and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Indoor and outdoor activities and refreshments are FREE, and it’s suitable for people with limited mobility.

Gwynneth Owen, project lead for the Rushcliffe Dementia Project (pictured above centre, with some of the Friends of Rushcliffe Country Park who volunteer their help), says: “Following our first, pilot ‘Green Memory Café’ in June, the feedback from everyone who attended was overwhelmingly positive, with some of the guests saying they would like it to be a weekly occurrence! We have settled for now on bi-monthly, and will embrace the changes in seasons and weather.”

She continues: “We’re hoping our activities can be enjoyed whatever mother nature offers us and, to this end, are encouraging people to come dressed in suitable clothing, ready for anything! We have a team of volunteers helping to lead and will be developing the format and organisation as we go to ensure it can be sustainable over the long term.”

Whilst there are already other, regular ‘Memory Cafes’ being held across Rushcliffe, Gwynneth says this special Ruddington location, and its focus on nature and the outdoors, is what is so attractive for this unique venture: “The sessions are particularly for those with memory loss, or with a diagnosis of dementia, but are inclusive for all who want to improve their wellbeing through a connection with nature” she explains. “I think we all benefit from a walk around the lake and a chance to take breath of fresh air! And, to follow, a chance to socialise over a drink and sing a few songs – what a great way to spend an afternoon! Then we know, of course, the added benefits are that visitors can come back on other days to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Country Park!”

If you wish to contact Gwynneth for more details in advance you can email gwynneth.owen@nhs.net or ‘phone 07309 852899.

However, there’s no need to book. You can just drop in to the Meeting Room at the Visitor Centre, first up this Wednesday 16th August, to join in anytime between 1.30pm and 3.30pm. Alternatively, future ‘Rushcliffe Green Memory Café’ dates can be found >>HERE<<.
